restoring/upgrading computer

for the past week i've been trying to upgrade this computer that my grandmother gave us... i put some more memory in, computer booted up fine and read it.. no problem there.. so i go to upgrade from a 2 gig harddrive to a 20 gig, and all of a sudden theres no power.. it won't turn on.. i have checked all the wires and everything, everything is plugged in.. i just tried the original harddrive back in, thinking it might of been a faulty drive and went into system overdrive and wouldnt let it boot up.. still NO POWER! now i'm getting a little ticked...anyone have any ideas? the model tower i'm restore is a "HP Pavilion 4535" i looked for the parts manual and couldn't find one..

Do you have a volt meter, check power supply leads for voltage first.

Its not looking good, but try to chase the power button cable, I've had them break/pop out. Did you ground yourself on the case before you worked on it? It sounds like a case of electrostatic discharge.

First thing to check is power supply. Adding equipment sometimes overworks the PS and it flips it's lid.

Hi Katie,

Here is the HP support page for that PC: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/p...lang=en&cc=us&

Sounds like there still may be something unplugged or a conflict in the system. Put the original HD back in (but intially don't plug the IDE cable - 2 in wide - or power cable, remove everything you added to it - like the new memory. Next, write down on some paper where every single wire from the power supply goes to devices and to the motherboard. then remove power to everything but the critical like the motherboard. Remove and reset the motherboard connector, make sure the video card is tight. Try to power up the computer, see if the lights come on, CPU fan and Power supply fan (if they have them), any beeps, monitor lights up and show BIOS info. If you start to get things working, you can add items one at a timne to see if something is defective OR if it all happens to work the second time thru...

What operating system do you have?

Is this your primary computer?

Thanks,

John

dad and i got it, we pretty much jump started it with the volt meter it was pretty cool. but it was a faulty harddrive i had gotten, well i had gotten 2, and both were bad, so i'm back with the original 2 gig harddrive... the ram is good so i went from 32 all the way to 128, all for free so its pretty cool..
