i have not found the big one yet but the number one skill is TIME.. TIME on the water, spending enough TIME at one spot.. knowing what TIME is best to go.. PATIENCE comes next. having the PATIENCE to give yourself the TIME at the spot your at.

Be sure to know exactly HOW you're going to land a big fish when you get to a spot- eye out a specific path to the waters edge where you can safely land it.

Also, some good advice I received was to back off your drag when the fish is in close... If your rod tip is up high and the fish makes a sudden surge, that'll help to reduce the strain on your line.
