I'm very sorry for your loss. I was looking at pictures two weeks ago of a trip to some of my family took to Ireland when I was 4-5 yrs old, 1973-74. There was a picture in the bunch of me and my Dad taking a ferry over the Shannon River. In the picture I'm looking at the camera, he's got his hand on my shoulder but he's looking at me, not the camera. I now know what he was thinking because I recognize the look on his face, it's the face I have on when I'm looking at my own son. He died in 1981 when i was 12. John, I say this because it sounds like you had an awesome relationship with your Dad. It's that relationship and those memories that will always keep him in your life.
