One of two ways:
1)VCRs almost always will give signal preference to their internal cassette player if you push "Play"
2)Some (well most) VCRs have an "Input" button that selects which input you want to utilize.

Keep in mind though, that I've found my success to be hit or miss depending on the VCR.
