You have to be one with the jig, sometimes it's just not feeling weight is the time to strike. Think of it drifting along, a little slower than the current and a fish is sitting in an eddy in the current and just pops up with it's mouth open. It's similar to drifting nymphs when you are trout fishing.

Maybe it's something along the lines of what "type" of bucktail jig.
I used to use the "el cheapo" shad head style, and moved on to the bullet head style (a little less resistance and a sturdier hook).
