Not a bad idea at all!

I can tell you from experience that there will never be an engineer that knows what a good machinist knows. Look for the busiest machinist in the shop and you will find the guy that engineering has the most confidence in. The machinist on the other hand should expect the engineer to learn as he goes. If you are doing the same simple calculations every job, talk to the man!

The engineer should also know; tap drill sizes, corresponding counterbore dias. and depths. Alloy specs, hardness designations. Finish criteria. The list goes on!
