TaJon,

I have only wrapped maybe 20 rods in the last 2 years or so. Actually took a class with Reel Ecstasy and from there was off to the races. Some rods rods were new from scratch some old and rewrapped. Once you get into the sickness of building your own it gets additive and you can pick sizes by eye. Its a great hobby.
