This may be counter intuitive, but I've had the best luck getting up close with a full flash.
Here are some examples. The left is a Piemma swimmer with a simply amazingly realistic scale finish. The other is a Rockhound needle, and as you can see the workmanship is top notch.
As an aside, if anyone wants any advice on their taxes, I know of a lot of deductions that probably won't get you in trouble.
