Not just another pretty face, I think the smaller surf howdy is one of the best daytime bass plugs ever built......and I don't say that lightly. If there are fish around, big or small, they will hit it. Not too many plugs can match that. Casts amazingly well for it's weight as well.

The first time I took that plug with me to fish with Numby in his boat I had three False Albacore plus I don't know how many bass on a yellow Howdy Bernzy sent to me (now retired in a place of honor).
At the end of the day he wanted a phone number ( I gave him Joe Lyons site address) and he bought a half dozen.
As he said, that plug is a dasytime bass killer. I have a friend who fishes and fished Fishers Island NY for years and now after showing him the plug and how it works, he fishes nothing else there. White w/pink or yellow is all you need to be succesfull with a howdy.
I never fish along the Elizabeths in the daytime without them.

Why even try.........

Actually, that day and that plug had a lot to do with me putting away the flyrod for bass and returning to plugging and plug building. Amazing little plug. Nothing I've built comes close.........but I'll keep trying

Twitch it, pop it, make it dart and dance, slip and slide........just work it different ways and watch what it does......If there are fish around, they will let you know what they want.
Also, one of the best surf fisherman I know just reels it in painfully slow creating a V wake with an occasional twitch and claims thats the best way to fish it.
Good luck,
Bernzy
