Larry, ya gotta be asking yourself, why is this guy coaching, for the kids or for his ego.
Usually it's pretty obvious ,and if it's all about him he's going to play the kids that will win for him wether they come to practice or not.
Kids get burned out pretty quick from organized sports. My son coaches High school football and baseball and finds alot of kids don't want to continue when its important, and could really mean something to them in the way of scholarships. He get's, "i lost my passion for the game," all the time from kids.
