I have fished the poppers from a beach quite a bit. I don't fish many of these any more, just a few of the newer ones. By new I mean from 1987 when I got the last batch of them. I have always thought of the big ones as trolling plugs. They don't cast well in my experience. The fish in my avatar pic is a 54 lber my grandfather caught on a blue goo goo swimmer trolled off of Nomans Land. He also caught a 60 lb from the beach on another blue goo goo swimmer. I know some of the old timers would fish the big swimmers from the beach. My grandfather and some others always told me to throw the big swimmer into the rocks from the beach. That is where the big ones are hiding. I haven't fished them from shore a lot, but I got the impression from the experienced people I knew that they thought it was a good surf plug. I have fished the 4" swimmers quite a bit from shore. They work especially well from a pier or even a boat, when you can be above the water and point your rod tip down and give really big jerks of the rod while you are retrieving. Gives the plug great action.
