The only time my rod tip goes low is when the plug gets much closer but most of my retrieve I keep the tip up...

sometimes you need to have a count of how many cranks on the reel before you hesitate....and barely wiggle it so it still seems alive but the forward motion is essentially stopped.....thats generally when they'll strike!, so be ready.....and if not repeat the proceedure....you can reel 3 times then 2 then 1 and stop...and like john said: Varying the retrieve until they give ->you the "clue"as to what action triggers a strike....

I like to use a wide walk in a cadance, such as tug..tug..stop..tug..tug..stop, a sudden change from this will drive bass insane, such as just reeling it in strait for a few turns nice and slow.
Also at spots where i have a current going away from me ill slide it along on top of the current in place for a bit then let it drop back, then repeat. Theres something about a plug getting carried away by the current that bass love.
