The big thing with walking the dog is learning it at daytime so you know how one particular action in a particular sea state does what to the plug. The action also varies on how far the plug is from the rod...

Varrying retrieve to find what the fish are on is a good practice but I personally start with a s l o w side to side motion and vary from there - I also always go back to slow when things slack...

you can also cast it out there and jiggle your line
