I like to see people with some pictures of their catches and their stories, but nothing specific. I find it amusing to hear about their adventures. Besides, those cow pictures keep me going.

I agree....I love to look at pics as well...and I will admit getting jealous of seeing people catching nice fish when I am not.....however..it's that same feeling that makes me want one even more, makes me try harder, fish harder and longer.....I fish alone 99% of the time...not because I want to, but because it's hard for me to find guys to fish with sometimes...but that wont stop me from going out there everytime I can to get me my own cow...it will happen...and it will feel that much better when it does...

It's too bad that a few guys will ruin it for everyone else.....I love to look at large!!

I saw a post on another site that asked if there was any action in the North river or is it over for the season. Pretty funny!

I don't know what's going on here but knock it off.

I am locking this and if John or the others want to open it up, then fine. but there is no need to pile on any members here.

I agree... This is a classic example of why Internet threads spiral. And a Posse thread in the making so we'll squash that...

I know Eben a little and he would share, to an extent with people more publicly but eventually seated himself to sharing more privately. So he does share. As for his story while I probably would not have done the same thing, I most likely would not have coached someone along.

In a somewhat similar situation years ago, Bill and I showed up at one of the long since overrun by reports places in Charleston where a fella just of legal drinking age was trying to impress his friend and his gal in the finer points of fishing. This "gent" chose to dress himself up in the "River Runs Thruough It" fashion so common at the time (he maybe even had suspenders on - can't remember). So this "gent", we'll call him Stu, had taken this spot over with the long wand - which would shut out every and anyone else from using it - then 5-10 people a night, now up to 25 - said he had been there all day, including a little while during the precious falling tide. He declared when Bill and I walked up that we would not catch a fish and it was not worth trying. He had such great confidence in his ability that he KNEW there were no fish.

On Bill's first cast he had a high 20#er and in my first cast I had a lowe 20#er, "Yep, no fish here"... "Stu" and his freinds left.

Well next year, "Stu" was someone we would se more often and "Stu" would eventually wiggle his way into fishing with several of us fairly frequently, I fished with him a couple times but I never really trusted the guy. He fished with Steve and Bill and Joe, among others, learing a lot of the good info, the wheres certainly, but the important whens too. He learned where to tresspass and soaked up all of this info. Sucked the knowledge tree as dry as he could in such a short time.

Then "Stu" started shore guiding people in to these places, every hole he was shown that produced he would charge people and take them in there and even occasionally catch a fish. And boasting and boasting about fish caught at spot after spot, to further drum up guide biz.... Well, that failed and his dad stopped paying his fishing "tuition" and he had to go back to Jersey.

"Stu" is a fine example of going the otherway and "giving" away everything to someone. If much of the knowledge necessary to being successful on the water is not EARNED, it will not be RESPECTED. And I mean respected not necessairly by others but by the person that wields the stick and did the learning.

So information, including "spots", are best given out in smaller bits and pieces from time to time, enough to steer someone in the right direction. Not all the info all the time.

Now what should Eben have done? Tell 3 or 4 guys standing in a spot that prevents him from fishing to tell them to wait 90 minutes until the tide floods and when the spot typically heats up? I've gone to places and seen people bang away all day to no avail and I hit them just as the people leave. I'm also sure I've "chummed" up a spot for someone as well.

These people may have been hacks - if that is what I saw I might have said something similar too, but not kept the mackeral (unless really fresh ).

If it had been a guy taking his son or daughter fishing, yeh I would have probably steered them right. If it looked like someone genuinely trying to make things working I might offer a tip or two, but if it is a bunch of hacks? Loudmouths? People drinkin' and fishin' - No way no how, I'd seriously consider lying thru my

We'll keep this thread open a liitle longer as long as it does not turn into:

or
B) A pig pile

Good post john.. your right i used to share more on these boards publicly, but the problem is that i would rather share with one or 2 people than to broadcast it to the whole world.

Just to clarrify my story, i get down there and these guys had 4 flats of mackeral that were uncut- who knows how much they had already cut up and tossed. They had a 12 pack of budwieser and more thanhalf was empty.

Nothing burns me up when i get down to some of the spots in gansett only to see trash left from fishermen.. im not pointing fingers, but most if not all trash is left by bait fishermen.... to me, they are the enemy. because of them, they get spots closed down. .. okay back to the story. I talked to them for a few minutes to see how they were doing and these guys had no respect for the ocean.. every bluefish they reeled in they punted back, or threw in a tidal pool to die they even told me that any bass they caught under 34 inches was going back too, which only told me that they had connections to commercial sales.... Not cool IMO.. After sizing them up for a while, i made the decsion to go jedi on them and tell them that the bass werent around..

IF these guys looked to me like the real deal, i would have sung like a song bird.. but they were meat hunting, and i chose to do way with them.. As for people attacking me for doing this, i guarrantee you would have done the same thing if this was going down in one of your favorite spots...

you can call it paranoia, but i would rather call it protecting valuable information from those who i dont know.

I'm also happy to see other peoples fish. As you can see by my number of posts I'm not exactly a seasoned vetern here. I would be lying if I said I joined this site simply for info. I like the interaction of "fish talk" and not revealing spots and posting your catchs is one of the main reasons this site exists.

If I'm fishing with a friend and we both hook up at the same time. I honestly hope that his fish is bigger than mine. This may be due to the fact that I don't catch "cows" often, so big fish are all good to me even if its not on my line. (like when my sister caught a 38 inch bass last year and I caught blue fish and sea robins)

There is something to be said about not making any conversation on the rocks and out of habit I stay off a spot if there are people there, especially Newbies and or chunkers, nothing against either, but regardless our fishing styles probably arent going to jive, so I keep away as much as possible;
on the rocks I am far from a surf sharpie; I do pretty well from a boat and hit it hard and do OK from the surf, but I love being out there on the rocks of sand at night..... I enjoy the solitude, the quiet; there are a handfull of guys I fish with, some more than others, it is always fun, but rarely do we stand shoulder to shoulder fishing, you chat on the walk in and the walk out; the rest of the night, go fish...
My habit is to walk by people I dont know, does it make me rude? maybe no news is bad news or vise versa, but I'll stick to my stealth mode

who knows, you may inadvertanly piss someone off, then the come on here and you realize it was someone who had posted for years, or 10min later they realize they'd been had and tires are popped etc.. there are alot of wack jobs out there...

E; you did better then us; ask BIJ about the adventure too bad... they were there... just didnt get the drift figured out in time....
