Very glad to see Zappa is still remembered, but I was surprised to
see no one mentioned Ted Nugent.
And just because its heavymetal doesn't mean some of the following aren't truly talented:
Kirk Hammett from Metallica(before the commercial crappola)
Dave Murray from Iron Maiden
Randy Rhodes with Ozzy
And several others.Plus the many already mentioned here.

So, uh ....Bryan, ya mean to tell me you like any guitarist named Brian -

Hey, not that there's anything wrong with that....

One of my favorites is .......me! check it out www.eaststreetjazz.com

I played rock and metal for 15 years. I have been playing only jazz/swing and blues for the last 10. For non-jazz, I really appreciate guys who can play without a ton of distortion or effects. I agree with all of the above except for Nugent. from interviews I've read, he always rags on Jimmy Page, he says he's sloppy, that may be true but Page's playing is a 10,000 time cooler than Nugent's one chord wank.
Here are some of my non-jazz favorites.

Danny Gatton - mind blowing work on a telecaster -this guy is rock, jazz, blues, country and rockabilly all rolled into one.

Jimmy Bryant with Speedy West - incredible western swing guitar. Amazing playing.

Les Paul - sure you've all heard of the guitar, ever hear the man? You won't think Hendrix was wild when you hear the stuff this guy played 20 years earlier. He developed multitrack recording, echo, reverb but the guy is an amazing guitar player. I saw him playning in NYC last year. 83 and still plays great. He is the father of all rock guitar IMHO.

Chet Atkins - beautiful player

Jimmy Vaughn - I agree with all the blues greats but I did not see Jimmy's name. He is not as in your face guitar as his brother but he is a wonderful player. His phrasing is like nothing I've heard. Check out his early stuff with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, not the cheezy stuff on the radio but the stuff on the albums. They were one of the greatest white blues bands.

Duke Robillard - Best music to come out of Rhode Island. Great all around player. I love his jump blues swing playing.

Django Reinheardt - Okay he;s jazz but - My stomach hurts when I hear him play. Jaw dropping and only had 2 usuable fret fingers.

I can post all day.

Leo Kotke is awesome. Saw him a couple summers ago in a coffee house type show in Chatham of all places. Fabulous. Forgot Duane Allman, self taught and could not read a lick of music, unbelievable on slide.

Why even try.........
