Bad News for Mikey
Unfortunately last night during a game of indoor soccer, Mikey went after a ball that he shouldn't have.
He fractured one bone in his tibia, and when the patellar tendon (I'm guessing) pulled away from his other bone in the tibia, it left a hole.
He also severed his ACL.
This is what i know so far.
He's going in for a bone graft on Tuesday to repair the hole. After that heals, he'll at least have to go back in for ACL reconstruction. Hopefully by fishing season is here, he'll be walking again.
Doctor's prognosis is that he might never be able to run again, definately no more contact sports, though.
I know that while I was recuperating from my second round of knee surgery i found this site, and it definately helped cheer me up. Unfortunately for Mikey, he has no internet access at home, so he'll be out of commission for a while (not for too long though).
Anyhow, for those of you who know him and want to drop him a line his address is as follows:
As my parents are away in the virgin Islands for a while, I've been the only one looking out for him, and being that i live 1 and a half hours away, it's tough to be there in person for him.
He could definately use all the prayers and good wishes anybody could send to him.
Christmas cards would probably be greatly appreciated.
For all of you who know Mike, either personally or through the board, will realize that he is very active and will take this setback in a very hard way.
Thanks everyone, and happy holidays.
Very Sad Rick

God grant that I may live to fish until my dying day,
And when it comes to my last cast, I most humbly pray,
When in the Lord's safe landing net I'm peacefully asleep,
That in His mercy I be judged, as big enough to keep.

Mikey - it will get better...
I'm not allowed to cut, run, & stop and had I done better job taking care of myself after my injury I'd be in better shape. I strained my left MCL, had large flaps of cartilige removed from left knee, and blew out my ACL - but did not have the reconstructive surgery done as I did not have any insurance at the time.... This was 92'ish. Wish I had the recon. Good news is that they've gotten a lot better at it... You'll also never look at a sports injury on TV the same way again....
Mikey - you'll just be able to fish more...

Bummer
Keep the faith though Mike! As rough as it sounds, and even though I have never met you, I think you are tough and dedicated enough to get through this OK!
My son blew out his ACL, did a 3/4 radius tear of his medial miniscus, did a minor tear of his patelar tendon, damaged his kneecap, and strained his MCL on Sept 19, 2002, 6 games into his 3rd year of Varsity Soccer.
Had the hamstring graft to repair his ACL, and the surgeon at NE Baptist repaired his miniscus with biologically disolving screws, on Oct. 9, 2002. Therapy began the night after surgery, with a continuous motion machine in the bed, that he could control with a remote. Several long months of intense therapy, and he was back playing club soccer, for the spring season beginning end of April 2003, with an ACL brace. He dedicated to therapy, and strength training to build his quad and calf muscles to compensate for the weakened knee. Played some summer league, and went to pre season for his senior year, and ran the 2 mile in 11:38, only 8 seconds slower than year prior.
He plays sweeper, (back), and plays the full 90 minutes, stopped wearing the brace on Sept. 19 this year, (his way of celebrating the anniversary), and ran the 2 mile in 11:23. His school team, the smallest in Division 1, finished with a 20-1-2 record, and allowed only 4 goals. He is now being recruited by a some good colleges, (I hope this works out!), and seems to have no permanent effects.. although, when he kids me about how I creak and crack when I get up, I tell him you just wait boy!
I guess, what I am trying to say to you Mike is hang tough, and give it your best shot!
Hope you make out OK.

Thanks everybody. I'm at school right now dropping off a doctor's note cause I'm going in for surgery. I won't be on line for a while, so , thanks for all the support, and I'll see you guys soon. Christian, if you want to send me a get well soon plug that will be great. I'll catch a huge fish in the river with it come May. Peace y'all.
P.S. Can someone make fun of my brother till I get back. It will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear this news. I wrecked my knee this spring and feel for you.
Good luck with the surgery and with the recovery. Take any worst case prediction and use it as motivation to prove them wrong. If you are a little bit psycho, rehab is not all that bad.

Speedy recovery Mikey. I've had three knee operations and they will never be the same, but the doctors are MUCH better with them these days. You'll be fine.
