I do the same thing on most of my plugs. Not crushing barbs, the flag tails are tied on cutoffs of thru wire from making plugs. 247lures carries them in a variety of colors if you don't tie your own.

In my experience, I you don't crush barbs, it is guaranteed to end up embedded in your thumb
