Recommend reading "Sword and Scimitar" by Raymond Ibrahim. Outlines what non-Muslims have historically been and are up against.
I've found it very informative that Islam's basic tenet is that if you are not Muslim, you are not anything; but, you can pay to be what you are and live as a second class citizen in an Islamic world.
The Shia's in Iran/Iraq want to dominate the Sunni's. The Sunni's in other ME countries want to dominate the Shia's. Iraq's people celebrating the death of General S are Sunni, and do so at the risk of death at the hands of the Shia majority.
Anyway... this book (and others) might improve anyone's perspective about what drives events in the ME whether the West were involved or not.

If guy A is make 10 bucks an hour
And guy B is at 15
But guy A is at now 12
And guy B is now at 17
How's the gap closed
Based on the information provided, the hourly wage gap would close in 7 years, if the performance of both remain equal. Wage gaps can close with higher levels of performance over time.

and just for arguments sake.....
There is a 40% difference between $10 and $15
There is a 34.5% difference between $12 and $17
So the gap is closing.
