I'm not a tinfoil hat person, but is it a coincidence that most cell phone plan providers allow you to upgrade for a "reduced" cost every two years? You are absolutely right it is planned obsolescence so they can keep selling phones.
One thing you can do is just don't upgrade the software when it prompts you to do so, the new operating systems always drain the batteries faster, but even if you don't, it seems these batteries only last two years.
