Since we never get clear definitions of things, I dropped a letter to MA Marine Fisheries and asked them to define "Possession Limit" .....this is the reply I got..

"As far as possession limit goes, it only has to do with what you are in possession of on a given day and wouldn't include fish that is at your home. You would have no problem making an argument that you had caught them on prior days. This obviously brings into question the idea that if you take your bag limit home and then go back out for the day can you catch and keep more. The answer would obviously be no but unless you were seen with fish already that day you would be fine."

Hope this clears things up....granted...this is MA and not RI

Thanks.. I generally try to limit myself to one fish per day, it seems to be plenty to satisfy the table. The "catching" has always been more fun than the killing and keeping.
