Those are the best looking poppers I have ever seen! Your killin me over here :) The color and pattern choices are PRIMO! Excellant job on the tails as well. I need all the specifics though. Whats the weight? What are they made out of? How did you get the faces cupped so perfect? What clear finish are you using?
I gotta know ALL the details! Please Please tell me:D |
Excellent job:claps: :btu: :btu:

Nice Work !!!
I love poppers.....so....I love them!!   |
Beautiful work, they look like custom furniture. You are a master!;)
|
on average they weighed 1.77 - 1.85 oz. i was looking for 2.18 oz, next time i will add a second 1/4 oz tailweight in the back. they also float a little higher than the recent gibbs (sits almost verticle) i was going by.
I made some last year that were unweighted, and they worked well, both in terms of casting and fish catching. i'm sure i'll do fine with these. wood is AYC envirotex finish to do the mouths i started with a forstner bit, next i do the angle cut on the bandsaw (you can't drill with the forstner after the angle is cut). then i round them out with this oval shaped rasp. i chuck the bit into the drill press and hold the plug (i don't spin it). if you only move the plug in the opposite direction the cutter is spinning it will not 'grab' if you try going clockwise you will have problems. after the rasp i sanded with some 60-80 grit, then 120-180 to finish. |

the rasp i was talking about....
|
those are sweet.
perfect all around:kewl: |
Thanks for the info, man those are sweet.
|
Ok, one more question...Did you use a forstner bit to make a recess for the belly grommet? They look really clean.
|
no, i just used a regular drill bit to counter-bore the belly a little.
|
Wow, They're perfect! Super work!!
|
So those are actually the smaller versions of the Gibbs Polaris. Close to the 2-1/4 oz. Gibbs not the 3-1/2 mostly used on the canal. With that deep a cut in the face they might dig in too deep and torpedo rather than the shallow cup face of the standard Gibbs which was designed to stay up on the surface and put up a big spray rather than a deeper gurgle and thus the torpedo factor. The way Stan designed them was for the shallow cup to make the plug put up a good spray on the surface but also when a bass missed or swirled you can just ease back slowly with very light tension and make it swim gently side to side. A deeper cup will not allow you to do that. I think they are too nice to fish so that being the case send the red/yellow ones and blue/white ones to me and I will add them to my collection for safe Keeping!:D

TDF i bought it as part of a 5 pc set for just four bucks. i doubt they would last long using hardwoods, but they work with the cedar i'm using.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...unction=Search in the find item number box type 4476 Flap, when you say smaller version do you mean same length, different weight? I've heard of gibbs' canal specials that were heavier, but were they the same length  The angle cut is the same, but i left the heads a little longer, to give me more room for the eyes....i didn't even think about how it would affect the action. Sometimes i TRY to get the deep, low sounding BLUUURP rather than the quick, splashy pop....i think the low sound helps me catch (non-blitzing) fish at times, for the change-up if nothing else. The top is a small polaris, below it was the plug i copied, the one that weighs just under 2 3/8 oz the bottom is one i made - but it could be flaps, if he promises to fish it and not let it sit on the rack......unless it gets to stay close to gibbs #1 :D |
Send me one and I promise to fish it:D
