Border crossings were considerably down. Agreements with Mexico and others were made. The decades-long mess was under far greater control. But now, the mess is back.

Customs and Border Protection statistics show that the number of "encounters" at the southwest land border has increased every month since April 2020, when the number fell to 17,106 amid the pandemic. The number was 74,018 in December.
