Small Goo Goo Eye?

Was there a small goo goo eye made? I tried doing a search here but it wont let me because the word is too small. I made my first, a copy of the one I regularly see. I just kind of sat it under the lathe and knocked out the shape. It's not exact by any means but I had the lip and wanted to see how they swam. I was very surprised by the way they swim. Nothing like I thought it would. I definately want to make more. My question is did they make a smaller one. I thought I saw one somewhere. Lip is not too hard to make it looks like and I don't see any smaller ones around anywhere so that looks like the route I'll take on the lip. Here's the one I made.

Great looking plug, colors are sweet.

Goo Goo Eyes are my favorite plug. I don't think I've seen one as small as that. I have a few originals. I will send you the dimensions if you like. I use them for SB around the Elizabeth Is and Gay Head and they produce very well at night. PM me for the info.

What do you guys use for eyes for your Goo Goos. I tried beads with painting the inner surface of clear or colored plastic beads but would prefer a solid eye.

Leo Cooper made a small swimmer that is similar in style to the big daddy and husky dude (8" and 6") plugs. It was originally called the "mini" and later the "small fry". It was 4" long and had a lip similar to the larger swimmers.
It was about 1" in diameter and weighed about 1 ounce. All screw eyes and no weighting. They are great fish catchers. We used to use them in Boston harbor in the 80s. They work great when you can be above the water on a dock/pier or on the bow of a boat, and worked with a jerking motion of the rod tip. This is actually the one plug I was thinking of when I got into plug building. We couldn't get any more of these and they were our favorites. I don't think anyone is making a lip for it. I use one of the pike style lips that Mike at CCBT has before it is bent and is just flat. The bottom curved portion is the exact size you need. I just trace one and cut off the top section, bend it and go from there.
For eyes, Leo used several different types of beads and then moved onto what I would call a doll/craft eye. I have purchased them off Ebay. They are a 9 or 10 mm doll eye. I like the veined ones.
He also made some other small swimmers. I attached a pic of some I recently acquired.

Here is a cool little popper he made. Probably the same body as the swimmer. If you want I can bring it to plugfest.

hey Eddie are you calling me old.

I'll bring a small one to the fest so you can see it, plug that is. That lip would be simple to replicate.

the guy that owns goo goo lives in Westport, Ma. but i am not certain he is making them anymore. I do know he has tons of bodies turned up but finishing them was his problem.

making the flatter lips are easy as some guys make the goo goo lip commercially and if you ask them they will sell you them flat and you can do the simple bend yourself. The lip will also sit on the face of the plug lower than where the regular lip is placed. Makes a decent slow retrieve surface swimmer. I would think more of a casting plug than a trolling plug.

I think I stated this before but if you talk to Charlie Cinto at any of the shows and ask him how he fished them, and he is worth asking as he does have a 70 plus lber on one, and used them a lot along the E. islands for many large bass, he said they did not really troll the plug but set up the boat up stream and let the plug back into the rip and held it there making it look like a struggling bait against the current with the boat stemming the current out in front a distance moving from side to side. He said only after the tide crapped out did they troll the plug up on top of the structure. Ask him sometime he is a wealth of info and a really nice gentleman.

With the few GooGoos I have done I used a pony bead from craft stores.

I made a jig to hold the bead so I could cut it in half using a bandsaw. Just two blocks of wood with a dent drilled into them for the bead to sit in. Then a small piece of poster board as a spacer the thickness of the saw blade to hold the jig open while cutting the bead. Took a couple of tries to get the dents to be the correct depth and even on both halves.

Then sanded the cut surface with really fine paper. Then I filled the hole with PC7 while it was sitting cut side down on wax paper. Tedious but gave a pretty good result.

The 6 31/4" Goo Goo is one of my favorites. Professor M you are absolutely correct. These plugs are best fished while stemming in areas that are known to hold bass. Always try these spots before trolling in areas at random. The big Goo Goo works best when the tide is "horsing" thru. As for eyes, I use 1/2"D eyes set 180 degrees apart placed about 1" back from the front.

there are no smiley faces on my IPOD so I could not put one next to my above comment, I am not really that much of a smart ass.

I make the eyes out of acrylic stock to the exact dim. of the originals. I also put a thru hole and a little counter bore in them so I can use a small ss nail to mount them. I like the clear acrylic as I can then paint the bottom of the eyes any color I want and the eye will take on that color. Time consuming but fun. Here are some I did several years ago. I really like making this plug but have not made any in a few years. I really need to make some more as they have all disappeared for some reason.
I am just about out of eyes and need to replenish my supply but I will bring you a pair this weekend Ted if I can dig a few up.

VT those are beauties
