Made duplicator this weekend-Question on templates

Hey guys,

I spent yesterday making a duplicator for the lathe, beautiful day here in WI, was able to have the shop doors open for the first time this year. Thanks to everyone who posted there homemade duplicators, it was very helpful to look through them
I now need to make some templates, I saw the earlier post and think I'll use the scanner method (I guess I'll have to obtain some plugs first, not too many in this land lovers arsenal,)
My main question is positioning, so the template should be exactly 1/2 of the profile of the plug you want to duplicate. Do you just use a square to make sure that the centerline to the plug template is directly in line with the center point of lathe stock?

Thanks in advance for your help. I've attached some pics, please comment if it looks like I forgot anything.

yes the the line between your tailstock and headstock needs to be directly over the center line on your template. the same needs to be true with your cutter and the piece that hits the template. I like to make the templates large by an 1/8th and sand them until I get the shape.

do a search and you will find some plug dimensions posted that you can use to get started. good luck
