cant beleive I forgot Nat King Cole, he is my all time favorite, thansk for the reminder.
I have to agree w/Spence and Katie, I always liked Steve Perry, even in the sappy crap.

Ian Gillian...he was also Jesus Christ in Jesus Christ Superstar.
For singers that really put feeling into there vocals I like Joe Cocker, Ray Charles and Janis Joplin. they sing it like it MEANS something to them
For Front men I like Roger Daltry, Steven Tyler, Robert Plant, Eddie Vetter and Micheal Stipe......Not technically the best but I think there voices are what make there music what it is.
The absolute Best voice around.......Aretha...my god when that woman sings it is truly Amazing.
Got to also give some Kudos to Whitney Houston (Pre-Bobby Brown) she had a spectacular voice.....listen to her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner if you doubt that. |

For male vocalist you should check out Jeff Buckley's Grace. The closest I could compare him to would be early Van. Jimmy Page said it was his favorite CD of the 90s.
For females the guy who mentioned Ella hit the nail right on the head. Otherwise for pop stuff Linda Ronstadt is pretty amazing.

I actually own the early CD that had the raw live tracks of some of the tunes on Grace. It's really amazing.

incredible vocal groups: as mentioned, The Eagles, Doobie Bros. and Yes were amazing.
Female singers: Sarah Vaughn was awesome and Tori Amos is just ridiculously talented.

For a distinctive voice Rod Stewart is likely as recognizable as most any. With the Faces he could kick it with anybody and as a showman he could out "Mick Jagger" Mick Jagger. As for versitality he could rock, sing a love song or the blues and even touched on (unfortunately) disco. His 4 American Song Book albums are great although he should probably have stopped at two. Gotta give him credit for being able to survive the many turns in music over almost 40 years along with many bottles of brandy and blondes.

I caught her when she was opening for Bob Dylan at the Strand in Providence one year, before she hit it big.
Weird to think of Dylan in a tiny venue like that.
Jewel was the bonus though. I was jammed up against the stage looking up. Jewel was sporting her typical short skirt. What a show. |
