i've been bitten so to speak. with our recent success i have a few questions. baits - anything work better than others? live/dead. oily fish or white meat fish. permits/regs - does my tuna angling permit cover me for other hms? or is it a seperate endorsement? targeting makos or threshers - is there anything to up the odds on bringing in these species, aside from heading further south? i know alot of questions. kings website has been great. these fish seem to tolerate being caught and released well and with the tuna situation being what it is this may be a fun way to catch some large critters and do some groundfishing. i'm gonna liveline one of those tiny dogfish next time out there

The bigger blue sharks are 5 miles east of the bank. maybe 20 a day some days. jig up anything off the bottom and fillet one side for hook bait. the huge makos will be in with the tuna close to the bank, {so will the hordes of doggs}the big blue sharks are out past the bank in the deeper water.
Your permit covers you, you can not shark fish with general cat. tuna permit.
Better chances at {more} makos and threshers are south of nantucket.
best tip I can offer is fresh chum. fresh enough to eat.

permit covers it

get a gallon of bunker oil and a slow drip

chum bucket

jig up anything

fillet it up

send hooks out on balloons varying depths

Experts will chime in with more sophisticated response but that about sums it up from what I can tell.

I would like to know how to target more mako/thresher over blue dogs.

I hear you have to go deep for thresher.

I've been sharking 2X, once with Capt Tom ( let's go sharkfishing ) who's website is a treasure trove of information. The only shark I've caught is an 8' blue. Plan to keep yourself occupied bottom fishing which really made a success of the Capt Tom trip, bringing home several 100's of lbs of cod/haddock while waiting all day for the blues to appear. They (10-12' ers) finally did at the end of the day but only inspected, not injested, our blue fish bait.

I have a dozen wind on rigs with rattle and skirts ready to go.

I have 2 cable tail ropes.

I have a harpoon with 2 cable darts rigged.

I have menhaden oil.

I have a detachable chum bucket system with radar reflector.

I can get chum on short notice.

I NEED TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We got 6, tagged 4.
Set up at 9. Landed 1st shark at 930

Great day for sharkin. Had at least 3 at the boat all day. Even a mola mola stopped by to check out the chum bucket.

I can't believe a gallon of bunker oil is 40$ bucks now!

we got 3 today and a bunch of codfish. fortunatly we didn't have to use macojoe for chum. i'll put some pix up later. saw some tuna just a mile out from green harbor on the way in.

I have some good experience sharkin. Fished the Oak Bluffs Tourney in 2004 with good luck, 2 mako's, a thresher and many blues (smallest boat in tourney). I'd be happy to share my experiences and best practices if anyone is interested. Two quick lessons: Think safety at all times. Mako's are the most agressive sharks on the planet and will try to jump in your boat. They are also fantastic eating. Some say better than swordfish. Fresh I give swordfish the esge but Mako freezes better and is delicious for a long time.

Over 20 Saturday at wildcat of all sizes a couple over 300. No makos yet but our ratio of 100:1 is dwindling down so we expect one any time now.
Invented a great new technique we call it the redneck long line a dock line with a swivel and single strand to a hook. Just hold on tight

Sounds like a bull ride.

Went 4/5 on Sunday at tillies. They were pretty aggressive, biting the chum bucket a couple took but chunks out of my noodle . Pretty rough seas, 1 man down to sea sickness.

Very small sharks compared to past couple years. Biggest being 7 or 8 ft average 5 fters. No makos for us either.

I would have thought the same thing, until it almost happened to me. Fishin the OB tourney and we hooked a smaller mako, 104 lbs. This fish immediately jumped at least 20 feet in the air about 75 yds off the stern and the line went slack. The fish charged toward us under water all the way to the stern and jumped at a full sprint right behind us. If I were standing a midship at the port gunnel I could have reached out sideways and touched the fish as it flew by above my head. It broke water 5 yards behind the boat and flew right by. 5 feet to it's right and it lands right in the cockpit. I can't help but believe that it saw the boat on the first jump and charged directly for us and then jumped when it saw the stern. JMHO, but I think the fish was in attack mode and it was no accident.

I'm sure I wrote a post on this back in 2004 but have no idea how to find it. Wish I had the cockpit video that Sandman is looking into. This footage would have definately been on ESPN without doubt.
