ball bit for poppers
What kind of ball bit do you use to make these? Never did this before and was wondering what the right tool and process is.

some use ball rasps. I use a Frued Round Nose router bit...expensive though. I haven't been able to find a big ball rasp for big poppers.

look for kutzall sphere burr
they're on ebay from time to time, maybe amazon too. Thats what i use, there are many different methods though. Someone else ground down a spade bit to cut them, or like Krinkle you can use a cove router bit with the guide bearing removed.

It's actually not a cove bit. It's a round nose bit. here's a website to look at.

do you have a fence or something set up so that bit doesn't wander? I would think the chance of it walking off the end of the lure, and into your hand would be high!  |

I use one of Salty's balls  to cup my Popper Mouths......works Great |

I use the reground spade and would even with a ball bit. It is a way better cutting edge that won't load up like a ball bit, regrind the point so it does'nt cut and will follow the thru hole.

I start it with a same size forstner bit so it doesn't wander. No knuckle meat....YET  |

If you use the router bit with the bearing on the end, take the allen screw and bearing off. The stub will center the bit in the nose wire hole. Just gotta be careful no matter what tool is spinning. |

Jim, I use a spherical burr from Foredom. I go the coarse ball and let me tell this thing is no joke. I hold the popper perpendicular to the ball while it in the drill press. Very unforgiving. If your not careful, your popper face will be 2" deep.
Use a 1/2 drill bit first then use the burr to finsh.

I have the green one pictured here, kutzall extreme 1"
No problems with sawdust loading up the ball at all, maybe because the green is the most coarse one. I use the same method as smac, except I don't start the hole at all, just go right to it.

i use the router bits minus the guide bearing method. just drill a pilot hole 1st that is big enough or they can walk a bit. then i just sand a lot. its a bit crude but does work. and yes i have had the bits bite into my hand so put the plug in a vise or something.

A light touch using the gold or you could again with (silver) a light touch rotate the plug on the burr.
If you notice a high cutter thats putting in a line file the offending "burr" down a little. Some of these burrs need tuning but well worth the small effort. |
