The plug is sealed? Outside as well as inside. Never had an issue? A few of the plugs in my bag have seen 4-5 seasons, thousands of casts and lots of abuse and not even a hint of an issue. 1 plug was recovered from the waters of Cutty after 5 weeks of submersion.....no swelling, no intrusion and no cracking at the belly weight hole which, if the water had gotten in there most certainly would have shown signs......but did not! I think I have confidence in my method. To each his own.

5 weeks wrapped around a pot line beating on those rocks, paint almost gone, missing 1 eye but no swelling and no cracking!

I slather Devcon 2 ton on the walls of the weight hole. Install the weight and let cure. Then Oatey epoxy putty as filler. Sand to shape. Seal.

Thanks for taking me fishing Grandpa!
