				Fine Dust Filtration

I posted this on the other site and figured many here would be intersted.
Cold and miserable outside so decided to clean up the shop and build one of the things on my todo list.I had all these things collecting dust so if you decide to build one figure the cost to be about 100.00 /150.00 for all the materials including motors and all.I started just by building a box with 1/2 sanded plywood.

I did not want it to be high and to save money i use a furnace filter then a hepa filter and another hepa after the fans. The hepas i am using are rated 17 merv which is smaller than 1 micron the higher the merv rating the better. You want 16 merv +.I used 16 x 25 filters then cut them in half .

I used two lighted switches and put a timer on an extension cord so when i leave the shop i just turn the timer on so it keeps on running up to 1 hour.I also wired the fans so i can run 1,2 or all 3 at a time.Works like a charm and it did not cost me 400.00 dollars.

They had a bunch laying around at work usually from when they get rid of old machines the maintenance guys take out all the good stuff first.I have seen them on the net they are called axial fans they don't use brushes so i am going to upgrade my spray booth with them also.Don't buy new ones lots of used ones around for very cheap $$.

How often do you have to change out the filters?

		 |

Karl according to the filters literature about every 3 months but i think it all depends on how much i am in the workshop will determine the filters life more.So far i am only in the cave once a week so i think the filters should last me for quite a while.I will keep you updated on filter life as i use it more this Winter.

		Machinists make the best engineers!
Suggestion; when you locate your filtration system do so to allow a circular pattern of air movement. This will allow air to return as it rotates in the room as opposed to a helter skelter air pattern.

Nice job!

Thanks Bill i did a little research on air movement and found the optimum place to put mine.Put it up as high as you can not to exceed 12 feet so you get no interference on the air flow.
