Scott - been in that condition for years. I have a gadget that was prescribed by a PT specialist. It involves laying on the floor & stretching my neck muscles. I followed the routine for a good period of time and have had good results. Not a cure, but after awhile I am now able to tolerate the pain.
This may sound stupid, but the therapist had Barb take photos of my desk and drawing board area with me working. Some changes in my workspace really made a humongous differance. The biggest change was a flat monitor and positioned it directly in front of me on the desk.
Other than that --- Drugs!!!! (Especially at night to sleep)

Exclamation I second G. F.'s assessment

Ergonomics plays a huge role in this...

My wife was once into ergonomics....ok
(required @ work)

so she helped me by taking measurements of
my computer area and then showed them to the head of ergonomics for evaluation and there was several things that were completely wrong and causing part of the problem and after they got corrected it made a huge difference.
