I think a lot of it depends on the grill and how you cook.

An all stainless grill like mine can be cleaned pretty easily. Every few months in the summer I scrub the outside with Barkeeper's Friend and always clean the grates with a hot grill before I cook. Once a summer I'll pull the innards apart and remove any excess bits that haven't burnt off.

Generally I try not to let too much drip down that isn't grease. If cooking with a lot of sauce for instance, I'll try to use a foil tray.

Try to always keep it covered when not in use.

Cheaper grills are pretty disposable. I don't think I've had one last more than 3-4 years. Even Weber's that have painted surfaces and non-stainless parts will fall apart after a while.

This is my first nice grill and so far I love it. My wife spotted it at Homegoods for 1/2 of retail...it's made by Lynx. Not cheap but the last grill I bought was a Coleman for 5 bills that lasted 4 years before I donated it to a S-B'er for 20 bucks. I'm hoping this one has 20 years in her.
