Anybody catch any fish on plugs they built over the winter yet? i tried mine out yesterday at Duxbury but it was too windy, and the fiush were way too small.

theres only one thing i dont like about that pier, the people who park their stupid cars on it so theres no room to fish. anyone who fishes it should park at the end so theres more room. even worse they seem to park in the exact area where there are fish. im going to write a letter to the fisherman magazine and ask them to post something in itso people stop pulling out onto the pier. just plain sel-fish. an article in the fisherman called it a drive on pier, bad idea.

Just keep at it and tune it even if it dont look right....
weighting is Key to proper action.............

i have made some plugs with sonme lips that look like they work but once i start reeling they sometimes spin,and veer off to one side, other times they just move in a straight line with no action. that'll be my next project, a swimmer that works.

Christian the reason everyone parks there is that parking is limited. It also keeps every one spread out a bit. Otherwise you will have everyone elbow to elbow. There are plenty of places that are as good or better on that island than the pier.

yeah i guess it keeps people spread out but im afraid im going to put a sinker through someone's window, thats all. i also agree there are many other places to fish also, i think im going to head to deer island because they opened up the hole perimeter with a fishable path like thing. if you know what i mean.

i caught fish on my home-made lures today. lots of fish, small, but lots. i caught them all off my friends boat off of logan airport. the fish were everywhere. only one keeper though, but i am so releaved i caught one on my own plug, the feeling is unbelievable!!!!!!!!

thanks . actually, the lure i made didnt have a metal lip or anything to make it dive. basically what i made was a rapala without the lip. it looks like a darter without the wide face. if you know what a cedar plug looks like it is basically one of those with a swivel positioned on top of the lure. it sinks so all you have to do is let it drop a second and jerk it. when i reel it in really slow it also has a wobbley motion to it. just an experiment that worked out well i guess. i aslo can reel it in fast on the surface and it sort of jupms out and then plops back in i'm in the process of thinking up a metal lip swimmer, always have problems with the lip.

o yeah, those ones worked sop badly i turned them into popers. ive made the lips almost exactly like on an atoms swimmer, put the weights behind the front hook but they just dont work. i am using some metal sheeting thats thick enough to hold shape and it doesnt bend when i dont want it too but i cant get it to work. i want to know how to make my plug swim.

C, what kind of wood are u using, how much lead weight, what style/size swimmer, is it thru-wire, how many hooks, etc>?

lets see i believe its hikory not sure, its the type of wood most spindles for banisters are mode out of, because thats what they are. 1-2 buckshot, a mambo minnow type plug about 7"-8", through wired, two hooks, front is a treble connected to a swivel that is in a hole drilled to the center so the wire can be passed through.on the end there is a single hook with bucktail. and i made a metal lip from sheet metal. total weight would probally be about 2 oz. what i want to make is a lure that swims, the same size as mentioned above or bigger, same hooks, floats, and has slightly more weight to it say three oz if possible.(i use a caster with a penn delmar, its hard-impossible to cast light things)

Christian, I can only take a guess here, but maybe its to heavy. Hickory is a very dense wood, and with 2 shots of lead it might be "deadening" the action.
Personally, the first thing I would try is a lighter wood, say poplar, and just a single shot, or even better like a yellow pine w/ no shot. It is difficult to get those kinds of weights (2-3oz) on a mambo style lure, where distance is the objective. I haven't tried though, I know youll figure it out.
Another thought is to make a larger lip to give more action, or even cupping it.

yeah i started a body last night but only got it round when i had to stop should have at least the body made , put on the white primer, and ill be starting on a lip also. it'll probally work oput after trial and error. i wont put any lead in and if thats too light i add more. i just want to get something with action. its porbally better to sacrafice weight than to sacrafice action. dont really need a long cast anyways.

yeah, i have a tenedency to pick out the denser pieces of wood because they turn much more easily than wide grained pieces. i tried pine once but it chipped. wood is wood.

i just finished my swimmer and a poper for a friend. the swimmer looks promising. really looks like an eel. i painted it with a silver bottom metalic black back, and its got some freeky eyes. the lip came out well. im filling up the bathtub for a test run.
