I have a 1087-88-89
89 is a beef stick spin
the 1088 I have is conv, and is my eeling rod
the 87 is lighter and softer, more my schoolie rod but it will toss eels and the smaller stuff

Used hard and put away dirty....

the 1087 is by no means a jetty rod for so-co. it is a perfect rod for throwing lighter lures, such as bombers, yozuris, soft plastics, small jigs, and smaller eels. it can be a nice back bay rod or just one to throw these smaller lures. it doesn't have the muscle needle in heavy tiderips or to move serious fish easily.
it depends more on what you want to do with the rod or what you are looking for in a rod.

Fore the jetties , 1089. I think you could toss eels off the beach and land any fish with the 1087. I would't say the same from rocks or a breachway.
The Allstar 1088 is a great all around rod for RI. Its powerful enough to use at the breachways.

Eben, the 1087 is rated 3/4-3 oz.
I use mine mainly for schoolies in the winter.
I know Redcrabber uses his to sling eels and landed a 40#+ fish on it.
So it can be done, but I like it for bombers and small jigs and small rubber.
