on LI we keep an eye on the local ocean water temp.
Cold water is a storm killer; if the ocean stays below 70, the North East is usually safe, good news for us, bad news for the South east.

the full moon looks orange sometimes when it rises because the light has to pass through more of the atmosphere then when the moon is higher in the sky. the blue light waves scatter but the red light waves pass through...... if you were wondering.

On Nantucket we wax our surfboards ...
us and everyone one else in the North Atlantic.
I think the bottom line is that as Global warming matures the sea temps will slowly rise. when will that bad combo of sea temp, storm track, etc. all line up like in '38.
In our lifetime ? probably. we all know we are way past due......
I like it when it happens out here in mid summer. clears all the summer people out of the mooring field overnight

The fishing in Connecticut would be a hell of a lot better if Long Island weren't in the way. I'd stay home more often instead of schlepping to Rhody for open water.

The global warming debate and storm intensity is an interesting one, very controversial, and unproven... in my opinion what you need to be watching as soon as a storm is formed/named is look for the bermuda high, which may or may not be controlled by the North Atlantic Oscillation; it steers the storms this way or that...
if it's cooler water it will drop the intensity but not change the storm track...
As far as being due... there are statsitical storms calculated out, for 10yr, 25yr, 50yr and 100yr storms; this means that a 100 year storm has a 1% chance of occuring any given year, and we could have one 3 years in a row, or two a year; its purely modeled and statistics;
For SoCo RI, an example of a 10yr storm = Bliz of Dec 1992
example of a 25yr storm = Bliz of 1978
example of a 50yr storm = hurricane carol
example of a 100yr storm = 1938...
So are we due? you do the math.....
