Split rings and hooks?

VMC's have shorter shanks than the open-eyed Mustads. The overall length of a VMC and a ring is just about the same as a Mustad without a ring.

After coutless flame wars on this topic, I believe I can say with some authority that the very best method is to use a split ring, or to just use a split hook

If using the split rings is going to cause the hooks to grab each other when casting,you can go to a smaller hook on the rings or use the same size open hooks without the splits.
