That is the way I do the cut at the joint as well.

You know what would be cool is after You make the cuts and shape it Just to wire the plug together after its been painted at the joints and then epoxy again. I think it would look trick.......

You mean make a space but don't hinge it? I thought about that a while ago but havent tried it.

You mentioned just making a U in the wire for the rear. I make a loop to keep adequate space between the front and back.
