Plexiglass(cast acrylic) is too brittle, use Lexan(polycarbonate). You should be able to get it at any hardware store. It may not be listed as Lexan, just as long as it is indeed polycarbonate. 1/8" is a good size and when it's in sheet form it will seem almost too flexible(it's not when it's cut small enough for lips). I'm not sure if the weights are exactly the same between Plexi and Lexan, but they should be pretty close. Personally, I wouldn't bother prototyping with the Plexi when a 12" x 12" sheet of Lexan is usually under $5, but that's just me. Hope this helps, I've been playing around again with hand carved plugs myself lately. Seems to be a bit of a trend.
