The wind was howling from the east
25 knots to rattle your teeth
6 foot seas tight and stacked
The 21 footer was sure to crack
An hour later, and frozen solid
we dropped three lines into the water
bump, bump, bump, and then a scream
two bent rods, what a scene!
The line was peeling off my reel
that cow was running with her meal
my son was burning up his drag
the sea was laughing like a hag
two more runs and tons of pain
the line she took I started to gain
my son was yelling, get the net!
a 35 pounder was my bet
Waves crashed against the hull
the men on board were scared as hell
the thirty pounder found the cooler
but the one on my rod seemed much crueler
Another wave met with a smash
the fish made her final dash
the froth was swamping onto the deck
I sliped and nearly broke my neck
My son sank the gaff deep and true
into the arm of you know who
I dropped the rod and blood shot out
"save the fish" I tried to shout
The awful clunk the rod expelled
as it hit the gunnelll and then fell
into the sea and out of sight
I Fought back tears with all my might
The trip back in took nearly 2 hours
I steered that boat with all my power
my heart was broke, my arm was aching
fishing in October is very painstaking.
