I see three or four main problems to the rc drag.
First, to hold bottom that far out, you need to use some serious lead, or your line, even using braid, goes 100 yards down the beach and gets tangles with your next closest buddy, fishing bait normally on the bottom. Since I assume you'll be using bait and braid, getting the knots out is a reall bummer. To hold our baits on the bottom 200 yards out, Mikey and I use 18 oz...guessiong twice that distance will require about 2# of lead. I think in any type of seas, this might cause your launch platform to capsize, since I envision the bait and sinker being held outside of the boat, to facilitate release.
Next, you'll need like $200 of braid to get out 1000', and you'll need to use a high-capacity reel like a 9500 SS; close to shore trollers just love to cut off those who drag far out to fish (trust me, they do, whether it is through ignorance or territorriality, it's just an inherent truth to the game).
If you get tangled and lose your spool, you're out $200 a snag).
Next, sea birds...they will get tangled in your line...trust me, they will.
Finally, seals...if you fish that far out, that's they're domain, and it's very, very hard to move a 25# fish with two pounds of lead, as a big MF seal is thinking...free dinner (just ask my brother).
What we do with the yak (where we do it) is a crap shoot every time; sure we do well during the day when everybody else is buzz-fishin, but remember, we're at most 200 yards out in a spot that this type of fishing works very well.
Lots of boat guys hate us, I'm sure we've fouled more than one lower unit with 65# spectra in the last two years.
All I'm saying is that be careful where you fish like this, and you're not gonna make many friends doing it. We're lucky, lots of people on the shore and some in boats know us pretty well, so when a snafu happens, most everybody involved is pretty copesetic...I do know certain guys who look for us on the beach when they are in their boats, and just love to cut us off.
Looking to become better friends with those guys next year, and show them a little Bushwhacker tag-team antics, maybe with the help of our near and dear friend, the Bassmaster.
Sorry to write so much, but its all very much worth knowing if you're gonna spend the money.
