Saltheart,
Good point...I dunno, but what I've found makes all the difference with eels is once they're hooked I get their tails in the water as fast as possible...it seems that the instant the tail touches the water the eel stays stretched out and they don't try to go into a ball...I think the problem arises when they're fresh, first hooked, and can get leverage to get their tails up around their bodies...if I leave them with their tails touching the water, they never seem to curl up...maybe they're straining to get into the water & stay stretched out as a result

Haven't seen any difference hooking them with a 7/0 Gamakatsu or with a surgical tube...just have to get them right over the side & PARTIALLY in the water. I used to end up cutting off at least two eelballs out of each dozen before I figured that out...I have a feeling that one of these days I'm going to nail a really big one with the tube 'n eel...what I haven't tried yet is trolling one of the BIG snakes on that rig...will before this season's out, though.
Tight lines,
