When I was in high school, my junior and senior year, I had a part-time job working for the East Greenwich Cemetery.....I used to cut grass and dig graves. I dug them the old-fashioned way, with an edger to remove the sod, and a pickaxe and long-handled shovel.
Now, during the summer, during heat waves - we'd get a lot of business, as old people tend to croak in twos and threes, even in small towns.
Sometimes I'd be digging three graves a day and it would go into the night before I'd finish.
My point?
I learned at an early age that when you're dead, Jack, you dead. I probably dug a couple hundred graves during my stint at the yard - I never saw a ghost, never had a complaint from a customer.
