want a new jigging setup
i'd like to get a new jigging setup. saw some nice gear on the trip. and i need a setup for 50-125# fish. it's got to be light, conventional, and middle of the road pricewise. whats out there
|
my 1st wife didn't like me fishing so much

Paul I believe jiggin john and frank both use calstar sticks with accurate reels, plain white spectra and windon leaders. I couldnt get a blank number for the rods.

I'd say Avet; they're light, price is OK & made in the USA so servicing is easy. Narrow spool models for jigging.
I have an Everol on an Okuma xheavy rod. The reel is a tank...simple reel...made with the philosophy that big parts don't break; the rod is cheap.. parabolic action... I paid $60 (Amazon on sale) and while not a high tech blank it has Alps reel seat and guides that cost more than I paid for the rod. Drop in over at 360 Tuna; lots of jiggers over there and a good place to pick up a used reel from guys who change their reels more frequently than I change my underwear. PS The Okuma heavy is a great bass rod!

As far as the reel, look at some Accurates. Personally, I'd think about the 665 in wide, so you can use it at home for bft as well...

I'm using a OTI Fathom Blade with a AVET HX 2 speed right now.....love the set up...fairly light weight. I was using a Shimano Trevalla and a AVET LX a couple of years ago until I got absolutely HOUSED by a fish. The LX had no play to clip into a harness and the Travella flexed so much that the line cut through the foam handle and started to rub against the winding check. That set up has been retired to ground fishing!

Personally don't like Avets for jigging... Great reels, but the drag can get a little out of whack when constantly going in and out of gear

I guess "middle of the road" price wise means different things to different people!!! No arguments on the selection though!

Yep... It's a pretty standard problem with them.
I have an MXL and love it. Use it for groundfish jigging, trolling, baiting, spinn's secret canal technique, etc... But if I were to be making a dedicated jigging setup, an avet wouldn't be my choice. YMMV  |

Paul, Pick up some used gear off 360tuna over the winter. I got a nice used Alutecnos Gorilla 12c there this winter. Got a spinal blank also over the winter and Bill wrapped it. You could buy a blank and have cms wrap it. Guys are constantly moving gear there. Got to keep an eye on it and move fast.
Surf the site and see what reels/rods are being used for the target range and your price range.

Accurate 665h 2 speed I'm partial.
As far as jigging rods are you looking at longer rods? 7foot for example or are you leaning towards the 5 -5'8" rods?

For jigging yellowfin tuna a saltiga 40 is a great choice also a penn baja special that is a lot less $$$$
