Grizzly Lathes
Do any of you have, or have any of you used a lathe from Grizzly?
They have a good deal on a mini lathe. The model I was thinking of is the G9247 Variable Speed Mini Wood Lathe. Was looking for a ok starter lathe. Thanks , Jay

Buy it! I bought mine used from Bassmaster (collectors item?) and I love it....it is just the right price to cut your teeth on, and if you decide turning wood ain't for you (ya right!)....you ain't out too much.  |

I got the 8690 from Grizzly. Its also a mini lathe and variable speed for $150. have not tried the one you mention. The 8690 did well for me. Used it for 3 years with no problems. Just got the Jet this year. Still use the Grizzly from time to time.

I had the 9247 and it was a great lathe for the money. Cast iron bed  Variable speed was nice too . |

thanks guys,
I think I am going to go with the G9247 mini lathe, and they also have a chisle kit G8945; comes with 8 chisels:
1" skew
1-1/2" skew
1/2" spearpoint
1/8" parting tool
1/2" round nose
1/4" , 1/2" , 3/4" gouge
I think that should be good enough to get me started. If anyone has any input please let me know. Thanks, Jay

Might skip the turning tool kit. Have not use it, but it seems there are a lot of tools in there that you will not use for plug building. Might be of use if you plan on turning other stuff. I use a 3/4 inch gouge and 1 inch skew, thats it. Some guys also use a parting tool. You might be better off picking up a couple of quality tools (Robert Sorby is what I use) rather than getting a complete set of lower grade tools. May be someone else has used the grizzly ones and can give you a better idea of what they are like.
Also, if you have not done so already, pick up a face shield and respirator (one for wood turning, not those cheap paper ones at Homies). Your face and lungs will thank you later.
