The little diesel is quite the engine.
140hp, 275ft/lb of torque. Cranks at very low rpm.
Whips around quite nice.

They make the TDI engine for inboards too...

Some people report getting 50 mpg highway in the Jetta. We just got back from Finland. My wife has a ton of cousins there, and most of them are driving TDIs. Diesel runs 1.40 Euros per liter. Close to 8 bucks a gallon at today's exchange rate. Regular unleaded there is 95 octane and it costs 1.60 Euros per liter. They seem to prefer the bigger Passat wagon.

I wish they made one with AWD. A little Jetta TDI Sport Wagon with AWD would be perfect for me.

 They do.
Audi A3 TDI Quattro
Unfortunately its only available in Europe.

You won't see 50mpg until about 25,000-35,000 miles once the engine is fully broken in.

43.7 doing 70 coming back from TF Green tonight.

Not sure why Audi/VW (USA versions) have not coupled the 2 liter TDI engine with their AWD yet. They do offer their Q7 SUV with their 3 liter TDI engine and their Quattro tranny(AWD) in the US. I currently drive a 2008 Passat wagon with the 2liter engine an a 6 speed manual which gives me 28-30 on the highway. I would love to have the A4 Avant wagon with the 2 liter diesel and a manual tranny... maybe in a few yrs Audi will bring them over...

 No real market demand yet.
Audi really isn't offering manual transmissions anymore with S-Tronic being able to shift faster than any human.

Thank you AudiSport.

In Europe where the mini van and SUVs never gained a big foothold the sport wagon is alive and well... most people who are active with multiple sports have European wagons with manual transmissions (VW, Audi, M-B, Euro Fords, Fiats, Alphas, Peaguots, Renaults (Just watch the support vehicles for all the Euro bike races)

With fuel 2x what we have been paying... the SUV never made much headway and the streets and tight village parking do not allow such huge behemoths.

to quote the marketers, US consumers don't want diesels

to quote the diesel lovers, The US tree huggers don't want diesels.

CA emissions have made diesels almost cost prohibitive with the stupid CARB rules.

I guess if they can handle Finland winters with front-wheel drive, I could get by with one here.

Mrs Nebe has had a TDI Golf since 2000.. The engine is incredible.. the rest of the car... JUNK. Going from Rhode Island to Ohio on one tank of fuel is pretty cool, but when all of the interior parts like door handles, glove box hinges, etc are pretty much designed to fail after 5 years, I dont reccomend buying one. I would love to put a TDI enging in my '71 Westfalia bus... that would be sweeet!!!

Call me old school but I still enjoy shifting a manual car... nothing like the 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd downshift at the right time on a curvy mt road.... its a big part of the enjoyment of driving for me...

To quote Audi, aka, the truth, there's no market demand yet.

And they defeated the CA emissions laws without any issue and without a major increase in price.

So are yours
CARB still has particulate rules in effect that friggin kill diesels.

you can read it as you slowly drift down tide

CARB classifies TDI vehicles as ultra low emissions.

What exactly is it killing again?

do you have a egr? and a CCV rerouted in front of your turbo?

the egr has particulate that in combination with CCV exhaust significantly reduces the lifespan of your turbo, don't want to replace your turbo, remove your egr.

Most heavy diesels don't have egr's.

the egr has particulate that in combination with CCV exhaust significantly reduces the lifespan of your turbo, don't want to replace your turbo, remove your egr.

Most heavy diesels don't have egr's.

odd! thats something that actual VW/Audi TDI owners don't complain about!

imagine that....

seriously, that was an issue back in 2001.
not in 2011.

do you still complain about catalytic converters?

I would love to put a TDI enging in my '71 Westfalia bus... that would be sweeet!!!

i agree with nebe. we are on our 6th VW (2005 passat wagon), and it will be our last.

I said that before, but this time i mean it. so many issues. both cosmetic like nebe says, and also mechanical.

Don't have anything like these issues with my F150 (90K miles), or my focus (sold with almost 200K miles), and all friends & family with toyota, honda, or others don't have all of these issues.

i'm sure the TDI is awesome and the VW lover inside me wants one so bad, but i am done with this torture... Our next purchase (probably within the next 6 months) will not be VW.

Wait 'til it breaks in - you'll see 625 or so on a tank. Yesterday, 340 mile drive from RI up to NH and southern ME and back. Averaged 49.2 MPG for the trip. It was over 51 on the trip up, but I hit traffic on the way back!

'09 Sport Wagon, 54,000 miles. None of the problems the Nebe has encountered, yet! I hope they improved since 2000.
