Reminds me of a similar situation over on the Vineyard---think it was 1996. That was the year that they had a massive bass blitz the opening night of the Derby, where Neil Plante's kid, Mark, caught the Derby winner a few hours into the thing. The fishing died early and it held up the whole Derby.
Anyway, I was there and the fishing was just about dead the last week of the Derby. I made a lot of death marches, fished all over the Island and only had a few teen bass from the Gut to show for it. Late in the week, I was heading out to the Gut just before daylight after fishing Up-Island all night. Tooling along by the windmill house. As I rounded the bend across from the boat house, I saw the water just exploding off the tip of the spit, in Edgartown Harbor. What looked to be a massive blitz of something--the water was churning white. I threw some water on my face and shook my head to make sure I wasn't seeing things after being on my feet all night. Nope, for sure, that water was just white for about 100 yards across, and the best part was, it was only about 70-80 yards out. I drove out to the end of the spit. My hands were shaking---fumbling, getting down my brand new Arra 1322 with my Newell on it. Damn, the blitz of all blitzes going on, within reach, and the best part is, I HAVE IT ALL TO MYSELF!!!! No one else anywhere around, not on my side, not across the way (for all the good it would have done them). Still wasn't quite enough light yet to see, but hey---what do you need to see? Not like you have to put a plug right in one spot, this "blitz" is over 100 yards wide!! I'm tearing thru the back of my truck looking for a 3 oz Hopkins. Finally find one, by this time it's getting lighter. Run to the edge of the water, throw the Newell out of gear, start to reach back to fire, I pick my head up and then I see the "blitz"---a flight of about 200 cormorants beating the water white with their wings trying to get airborne
