REMOVING OLD PLUG PAINT
A member gave me a dozen plus Blue Streaks, Capt Bills and Goo Goo eyes to refinish. Believe me some are tough but doable. I don't want to be sanding for eternity bringing them down to wood. The Capt Bill's have a layer of paint measureable with a mike. I was thinking of putting my sand blasting cabinet to use. Any other suggestions?

a propane blow torch and scrape it off
sandblasting will harm the wood

I just blasted the GooGoo's but the Bluestreak's need to be burnt and scraped. Thanks Bruce.

Gel paint stripper and a coarse stripper pad works fine and is easy. Lather them up, throw them in a plastic bag for a while and the paint will come off easily without abrading the wood too much. Rinse them off well, sand and reseal and reprime. Good to go. If you are worried about adhesion (which isn't a problem in my experience) wipe them off with Wilbond before priming.

Well they're all stripped, drill and sanded. The GooGoo plugs were chucked in lathe and sanded down after blasting the top layer. The Blue Streaks were stripped with a torch. Worked great. Took a scraping knife after they were on "FIRE". SWEET. anyway after I chucked in lathe and gave them a good sanding. The one plug that was tough was the one Capt. Bill swimmer. The finish was like iron. Didn't burn just blistered. Had to redo and scrape. Anyway next step in the sealer!. Thanks for everyone suggestions.

Next time try a heat gun. I got one from grizzly for 9.99 when I order some stuff a while back. I use that thing for everything. It's deceiving what it can do. Paint bubbles up and strips easily.

I have a large jar, in which I keep stripper for just such plugs. Place plug in jar that has a hole in the top through which a wire is extended that is attached to the plug. Put in jar, wait two days. Take outside and remove plug. Use rag to wipe off stripper, then throw away rag. Voila, workable plug.

one of those plugs was a Howards"jet plug" an not a bluestreak....think it was the second one down on the right...looks to be black now.

Thanks. You have a good eye to pick that out. I was wondering cause of it's extremely large wire hole. Shape wise it's similar. Any info on the plug's history? |

two men entered...one man leaves...Howard Ledig from wrentham.ma....he made a swimmer and one popper...the one you had was called a squid red....early 50's to 57.
Howard l and john gamsby owned a co. called J & H tackle co...before they split up.
