Wakefield Retired - Thank You God

He had a good career, he ate up a lot of innings in losing efforts, had some stellar moments, he contributed to the championships, and was always there at children's hospitals and good member of the community. He never disgraced the uniform or cheated on his wife.
But thank you God, that he finally retired. True, he was ushered out by only being offered a minor league contract, but to wait for him to retire without a push and you'd be waiting a looooong time.

He always seemed to pitch on the Fox Game of the Week or Sunday Night Baseball and the games in which he pitched were just not entertaining. He's Don Orsillo's best friend - they go striper fishing together.

				 | started as a utility fielder, found a niche, played his entire career with 2 teams. The knuckleballer of our prime, the Niekro's where the last before him.
He was unhittable and almost uncatchable on good days. But almost unwatchable every day, his pace was so slow, I'd rather knit than watch him

				 | You're right, Mr. Sea Dangles. I don't know for a fact. It's an "if-then" presumption. Also, that many years, and there would be rumors. No way Orsillo would have anything to do with him if he was cheating on his wife. That guy is the epitome of the careful, disciplined man, who watches his step and can hold his tongue. He's not blowing that gig and his marriage over some on-the-road woman - guaranteed.
It'd be a toss-up over who was more squeaky clean between Wake and Orel Hershiser.

				 | I was out on Landsdowne St. with Wake the first time he was in Boston. A good friend of mine went to college with him and he came up one summer for a visit.Squeaky clean...? He was awarded the Roberto Clemente award, baseball's most valued IMO. |

				 | I always liked the way he has conducted himself.. in victory and in defeat... he had some real stellar games... down to the last few batters on several no-no's.. he had his share of real stinkers too... unfortunatly.. only the rocks live forever... sooner or latter father time catches us all.. he will be Missed.... thanks Tim for all you did... both on and off the field. |

				 | Great career! Thanks Wake!!!! I've bumped into him a couple of times at Tosca in Hingham. Nice guy and was happy to chat it up both times. Probably helped that i was with my better half. So..... HOF worthy??????? |

				 | I think that the only way he would make the hall would be on the thought that he is/was the last of the ( sucessfull) knuckleballers.. other than that... not likely |
