When I'm using screw eyes, I usually do a pilot hole with a bit that is smaller than the screw eye. After that, I hit the same hole about 1/4 inch deep with a bit that is twice the size of the screw eye. Will make the bond stronger. Also makes getting the epoxy in the hole easier, and they are not coming out that way. Mix up the epoxy and use a section of wire to put it in the hole. If you did not do the larger hole, you can mix up the epoxy and smear it around the tip of the screw eye and part way up the shank.
