MAC Virus scan or protection Help

I have a MAC but not very familiar with it and think it may have a bug. Anyone know the best method for scanning a mac or should I just install some virus protection SW? Are the free ones any good?
I keep getting popup adds for MAC Keeper and they're relentless, hard to close without ending up on their site. |

MACs don't get viruses....you didn't pick the blue pill did you :hihi:

I don't currently have a MAC but looking this up: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2406379,00.asp
I would choose Sophos for a free one. Remember to backup your machine fully on Time machine before installing any AV |

Thanks Guys. Fortunately, I'm smart enough to not "click here for help" on the "you've got a virus" popup but I've had a couple of instances lately where OSX had automatically closed web sites and left a box in its place indicating the sight was trying to install malicious software. My firewall is pretty tight but who knows what the kids are clicking on.

Safari can still get hijacked. Force quit the app, turn off your wifi and then reset Safari.
