Acorns

I have never seen so many acorns as we have this year. My yard is covered and they are still falling. With this wind it sounds like it is hailing on my roof. Friggin unbelievable racket.

PRBuzz 09-16-2010 07:12 PM

I don't have nearly as many acrons as in that past: I cut down the oak trees!

striperman36 09-16-2010 07:13 PM

I thought someone was shooting .22 cal with the wind, when I was up at Sebago Lake. amazing.

Lots of chipmunks this year too!! I have them everywhere!

Me to, now I just have pine cones

Just think how many of those little jems will be buried by the rodent population and forgotten, only to sprout within the next year?

Piscator 09-17-2010 10:42 AM

someone told me that these things go in cycles too. I'm sure it has something to do with the hot summer we had as well. I had more pine cones this spring than I can remember. I think the pine cone thing goes in 5 or 6 year cycles.

Paul,

I'll be releasing all the squirrels I've caged this past week into your yard to help with the cleanup!!:biglaugh:

FishermanTim 09-17-2010 02:08 PM

We need a little "Chip & Dale" action to counteract all the acorns!

(If I'm not mistaken, it's a Disney gem with Donald Duck, the chipmunks and house full of acorns!)

ProfessorM 09-17-2010 05:05 PM

its like walking on marbles in my yard. Tons and tons. Good thing I got 3 outdoor cats to clean up the little rodents. I found dead ons yesterday . Lt. Dan please send them along or I will have to rake them up this fall.

Plenty of acorns this year, but not one hickory nut.
Last year i spent an hour everyday blowing them off my lawn.

Raven 09-17-2010 10:48 PM

acorns are huge i noticed

sounds like someone throwin rocks...

i had a showdown with the damn skunk however
lucky for him
i didn't have my nice round head crushin stone handy

but the bricks i threw in his direction after i hurled the huge boulder
(the scottish method) :rotf2:
made him decide to find greener pastures elsewhere........
haven't seen him since....

Acorns

I thought it was just me but I too have a chit load all over my backyard and a huge concentration by my shed.I figured it was just the chipmunks hording them for the burrows

I once heard that when theres an over abundance of pine cones on the trees it would indicate a long snowy winter, does the same hold for acorns?

Raven 09-19-2010 10:03 AM

it might be...

Due to the fact we've had a dry summer/ and fall "thus far" for rain accumulation the oaks might bear more fruit...(acorns) because the
Rot factor is lower and more will germinate come spring.

Nature always compensates for certain weather conditions.

ProfessorM 09-20-2010 09:07 AM

man I would have thought they would have all come down by now but it is gusting out there today and they are coming down on the roof in droves. You need a hard hat to walk around in my yard today. I now have an acorn driveway instead of a crushed stone one.
